What is the Purpose?

by Frank Beasley on November 16, 2022

For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  Romans 1:20

Have you ever noticed the little blue reflectors in the middle of the road? They seem to be scattered randomly all over town. For years I have driven by them or rather over them and never noticed or paid any attention. But it seems they serve a very valuable purpose to someone who knows to look for them.

I am not a Bible scholar by any means. I have read through it a few times and I must admit that it seems to go in one eye and out the other, so to speak. Just when I think I have something figured out and try to explain it, I learn I missed the point completely. That’s OK, it’s a process. Over the years, through Bible studies, guidance from friends, church sermons and reading, I think I am slowly picking things up bit by bit, things that I may have just past over before. It’s kind of amazing how every time I read something in the Word, something new pops out that somehow seems to answer a need or provide an “oh now I get it” moment.

It just points out that the Word of God is not meant to sit on the shelf. It’s alive and can speak fresh and new every time you open it. It also points out that it’s not a do it yourself activity. Input, guidance and support from fellow Christians is vital to our spiritual growth.

But there’s more. As Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16–17,  "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that a servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." In other words don’t just learn it, use it.

Oh, about those blue reflectors in the road. As it turns out they mark the location of the fire hydrants. The fire fighter knows to look for those in the road, especially at night, to easily find the fire hydrants. It’s kind of like we know where we need to look when we have a need.
