What Does That Mean? Psalm 119:1-88 (Part Two)

by Jim Dunn on May 05, 2023

A quick review: In Psalm 119 God speaks numerous times about His statutes, but what does that mean? God’s statutes are His warning signs that He gives to us in His word to protect us. They are His boundaries for life. We need to know them and learn to obey the Word of God.

Another word that God uses in Psalm 119 is “judgements”. We judge people and situations all the time. Our judgement is superficial and generally incorrect. But God’s judgements are totally perfect and never wrong. God’s judgements “are to both comfort and motivate us to live godly lives,” according to the word of God.

Let me illustrate just one example. In John 3:17 we are told “For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

I pray and hope you have never had this thought, but I have. What thought is that? That someone who hurt or wronged you would go to hell. Ouch! Yes! I have thought that, and it was so wrong, sinful, and out of line. There was no peace or joy in my irrational and ungodly thinking. God’s judgement is nothing like mine so I/we need to know what His judgments are so we can be motivated to think and live godly lives.

Truthfully, there is way more peace and comfort in godly judgements than in ours. So, go ahead and study some of God’s judgements for your personal life. Next time we will look at God’s precepts. God bless you!
