Through the Goalposts of Life!

by Hal Armstrong on October 19, 2022

Well, it’s football season, and to top it off, I think I just found my new favorite Country Music song. “Dropkick Me Jesus Through the Goalposts Of Life”. It’s a simple song, and when I first heard it performed by Bobby Bare a few days ago it made me smile just thinking about the concept. So, I decided to download the lyrics to get a better understanding of what the writer was trying to convey:

Chorus:

Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life
End over end, neither left, nor the right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life

Make me, oh, make me, Lord, more than I am
Make a piece in Your master game plan
Free from the earthly temptation below
I've got the will, Lord, if You've got the toe

Chorus:

Bring on the brothers who've gone on before
And all of the sisters who've knocked at Your door
All the departed, dear loved ones of mine
And stick 'em up front in the offensive line

Chorus:

Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life
End over end, neither left, nor the right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Dropkick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life

Yeah, dropkick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life
End over end, neither left, nor the right

Now I loving watching football, and I even attempted the game as center during my freshman year of high school, that was until my “teammate”, Bo Palmer, who opposed me at Nose Tackle buried my face in the muddy turf during practice, not once but several times. Needless to say, I soon determined I was probably more suited to be a spectator than participant.

So, when football season arrives, I enjoy watching the game in the comfort of my living room as I not so fondly recall trying to breathe after Bo happily pulled me up from the mud and helped remove the mud and grass from the inside of my now backwards helmet, so I could learn how to breathe again. Ok, enough about my stellar football career.

Let me ask you a question. What does a football do? Or, perhaps better said, what does a football do until someone does something with it? It does nothing, just lays there… dead. Period.

In Romans 6:23 Paul tells us, “For ‘the wages of sin is death’, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We’re all sinners, and our sin results in eternal death [separation from God].

And just like the football, who needs someone to pick it up and do something with it, we are dead and unable to do anything to save ourselves until, by the grace of God, Jesus picks us up, and does something with and for us…giving us flight, or life. The Holy Spirit then guides us on our way.

When you place your life in the hands of Jesus, you can be sure that He will get you to where you need to be. You will, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, travel through those righteous goalposts and be with Christ for all eternity. There may be days where you tumble end over end, wobble around and even slip sideways from time to time, but you are guaranteed to make it between the uprights because Christ is a faithful Savior.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, a trustworthy guide who leads us to where we need to be. He is faithful and will lead you down the righteous path in life, continuing into eternity with Him. Simply place yourself in His hands and He will send you in the right direction.

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”  Phil. 1:6
