The Old Rugged Cross

by Lorna Zink on April 15, 2022

My family used to sing in the car when we were going to visit someone- Mom and Dad in the front and my sister, Linda, and me in the back. We often sang hymns. My dad said when he was a youth back in Nebraska he sang in the church choir. I can even vaguely remember his voice as we sang “The Old Rugged Cross.” I’m sure you know the words:

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross…

Use your imagination as you read the lyrics. Close your eyes and picture yourself clinging to the cross.

When you are ready, come back to the verse:

“I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.”

Try putting this picture in your mind daily. Think of what Jesus has done for you.

Jesus invites us, “Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28
