The Greatest Trick

by Sandy Parker on May 04, 2022

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;  I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."  John 10:10

"The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.  The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you"  Romans 16:20

Despite God being everywhere…  many people do not believe He really exists.  God is evident in all things, and that cannot be disputed.

There was a sitcom on for several years called “The Big Bang Theory,” about a bunch of super smart scientist nerds.  One of the characters, Sheldon, does not believe in God, but his mother does.  In a spin-off episode titled “Young Sheldon,” Sheldon’s mother is having a crisis of faith, and Sheldon tries to comfort her by saying:

"Did you know that if gravity was slightly more powerful the universe would collapse into a ball? Also, if gravity was slightly less powerful the universe would fly apart and there'd be no stars or planets," he explained.

Adding, "Gravity is precisely as strong as it needs to be and if the ratio of the electromagnetic force to the strong force wasn't one percent, life wouldn't exist, what are the odds that would happen all by itself?"

When asked why he is trying to convince his mother that there is a God when he doesn't believe himself, Sheldon responds, "I don't but the precision of the universe at least makes it logical to conclude there's a creator."

It’s difficult for me to understand how people can see the complex, intricate nature of this world, and everything in it, and not believe there is a God.

Look at a newborn baby, knit together perfectly in its mother’s womb.   The human body is an extensively vast web of cells and is one of the most complex productions in the world.  Cells come together to make tissue. Tissue fit together to make organs. The nervous system regulates everything.  The brain is the most complex “computer” that exists and is the control center of the body.  There’s the muscular system made up of tens of thousands of small fibers; the complexities go on.  Just look at the complex elaborate nature of the human eye*. How can that possibly be an accident, or evolution?  Yes, species do evolve to survive, but who created them to be able to do so?

What about nature.  The world is so diversely beautiful and complex and everything works together just as it should.  Creation is an amazing feat.  The sun and moon and stars, the oceans and mountains, rivers and valleys, trees and flowers galore. Animals of every kind, birds that fly swiftly in the air, held up by…  the hand of God?  Rain, snow, cold climates, hot climates, everything-in-between climates.  Waterfalls, rainbows, sunsets…  it’s never-ending.  We must look and we will see.  Seek and we will find.

Unfortunately, many don’t believe the devil exists either…  he is just as real, but unlike God, he is sneaky, a liar, and he doesn’t want us to believe in him, because then he can really attempt to mess with us.  I say, “attempt to,” because fortunately, God gave us the Holy Spirit to protect us, comfort us, and direct us in the ways we ought go. The devil simply cannot beat us so long as we keep our eyes focused on the Lord.   We need only to believe in God and trust Him.  We also need to believe the enemy exists, and be aware of his tricks, but we do not need to be afraid of him. God is with us, God is greater!

The ending line from the movie “The Usual Suspects” with Kevin Spacey is: “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.  And like that… poof!  He’s gone.”

In this world, there are forces of good and evil, and that is precisely why it is critical that we keep our eyes on Jesus.  “Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9.   James 4:7 tells us:  “Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
