The Christ Child

by Lise Bachman-Karnes on December 19, 2023

At Christmas we focus on Baby Jesus. There are manger scenes, plays, and music which focus on the Christ Child.

The angels proclaimed His birth to the shepherds and Mary pondered these things in her heart. The Bible tells us that when Jesus was presented in the temple, Simeon praised the Lord for the arrival of the Messiah and said: “This Child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Luke 2:34-35

Mary and Joseph marveled at what was said about Him.

Even the Wise Men, who probably didn’t arrive till Christ was a toddler, focus on the young Jesus, albeit as a King:

“On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

Again, we have Mary pondering these things in her heart.

My point is that when we are worshiping the baby Jesus, we are actually worshiping His potential, what He is going to do for the world. Without this, there is no reason to worship a child. So, if we get caught up in the pageantry of Christmas but do not also worship the potential of Jesus, we are missing the true miracle, that He came in human form to save the world. This is what Mary and Joseph marvel at even as He is an infant. They are given a glimpse of His future glory. They are given a look into His future purpose. We have been given the entire picture if we widen our gaze to worship the coming King. Christ came into our world, died and rose for the forgiveness of our sins, and He is coming again. Praise the Lord!
