Speaking Kindly

by Ilana Ferguson on October 21, 2021

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb - sweetness to the soul and healing to the bones”  Proverbs 16:24

We all know how much power words can hold.  This is often said to us with a reminder to ‘hold your tongue’ and be cautious in speech.  However it’s also important to examine how we often think kind things, but generally are not quick to say them.

My roommate is really good at sharing with me and others little and big ways we’ve made her feel loved or the things that she’s thankful for on any given day.  (Even something as simple as “Thanks for watching an episode of 'The Office' with me today”, makes me smile, because I know it’s said genuinely.) She makes it a point to tell us and in doing so, the bright, warm moment she experienced is also shared back with us.  What a beautiful cycle; it reminds me of this verse - “Gracious words are like a honeycomb - sweetness to the soul and healing to the bones.”

What a precious, simple and tangible reminder of the impact we can pass on.  ‘Sweetness to the soul’ and ‘health to the bones’ also show how deep the effect can go, to the deepest parts of us!  There are a couple takeaways that come to mind when I read and reflect on this.

  1. It is important to speak kind words to other people.
  2. It is also important to surround yourself with the kind of people who will speak kind words unto you!

There is so much power in community - just like words, they have the power to build up, or to drain life.  How will you share gracious words like honeycomb and invite others to experience the sweetness of Jesus today?  I pray you experience His love and care through others today as well.
