Our Hiding Place

by Patrice Verhines on February 28, 2024

Imagine God as your hiding place!  Our Bible Recap’s “Names and Attributes of God” lists over 50 terms for the Triune God, and Scriptures where they can be found.  What a great tool for meditation, prayer and praise.  One term is the concept of God as our hiding place.

The Hebrew word for hiding place in the Old Testament sounds like a mystery, something hidden or secret.  It can also mean a place of refuge where one can feel safe and secure. The Jerusalem Prayer Team (https://hebrew.jerusalemprayerteam.org/hiding-place) describes the Shekinah Glory in the ancient Hebrew understanding of God as a hiding place.  They say “under the wings of the Shekinah” (not just Shekinah, but the Shekinah) as in the verse, ‘Let me dwell in Your tent forever.  Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.’  Psalms 61:5.

Here are more ways to see God in this comforting context:

HE IS A SAFE HIDING PLACE, “a shelter from the storm” (Isaiah 32:2). “In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues” (Psalm 31:20).

HE IS A SURE HIDING PLACE.  “For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock” (Psalm 27:5).

HE IS A SECRET HIDING PLACE.  “You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble” (Psalm 32:7). The word hiding” is rendered “secret” in some Scripture translations.

HE IS A COMFORTABLE HIDING PLACE.  “Let me dwell in your tent forever!  Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings!” (Psalm 61:4), as young birds find comfort under their mother’s wings.

HE IS A STRONG HIDING PLACE.  “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1).  The Shelterer is the Most High God.

HE IS A SECURE HIDING PLACE.  “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word” (Psalm 119:114).

HE IS A COMMUNING HIDING PLACE.  “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the crannies of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely” (Song of Songs 2:14).  Our Lord is not a cold rock to shelter in, but a living Person who we share our lives with.

May today be filled with the comfort and assurance that you are sheltered in the arms of God.

If you have four more minutes, be blessed by this beautiful prayer in song by Selah:
