One Small Miracle

by Jim Duncan on September 23, 2022

We have a hummingbird feeder hanging just outside our kitchen window.  I see the tiny birds almost every day. Sometimes I see them throughout the day.  Sometimes I see three or four at a time.  Watching recently, I became intrigued.  They can quickly dart in any direction.  They can fly backwards.  They can hover. Their long beaks are perfect for getting deep into a flower for nectar or into the backyard feeder for the concentrate we supply.  They are certainly designed differently than the other birds I see in the yard.

Fascinated, I did a quick “google” search.  I found that there are more than 300 species of hummingbirds. Three similar types are found in this area.  They arrive in mid-January and leave in mid-November.  Their maneuverability is amazing.  Their wings beat 50-80 times per second. They can reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour.  They have the ability to navigate.  They migrate hundreds of miles.  They have remarkable memories.  They are truly incredible.  As I read about these little birds, I was reminded that without God there is simply no explanation for much of what we see and experience in our daily lives.

In Romans 1:20, Paul tells us “For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Paul is stating that we can know some things about God by simply looking at the things He has created. Certainly, hummingbirds are an example.  Its features would have had to work perfectly from the beginning for it to survive. God intricately designed and created it to be unique. God is a God of wonder, beauty, creativity, art, detail, finesse. We only need to stop and consider the miracles of creation that are all around us to know that God is real. His creation points to Him as creator. The complexity of creation is no mistake, accident, or product of evolution. May your consideration of God’s creation cause you to be in awe of God and worship Him.
