New Year, New Me

by Harry Ulep on January 18, 2022

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”  Isaiah 43:2

Always around the month of January, one thing comes to mind: New Year’s Resolutions. Maybe you’ve heard it said “New Year, New Me”, a saying that contains much hope and aspiration to strive for goals we would like to see accomplished over the coming year. Whether that be the commitment to physical health, financial stability, or taking next steps in life; most people at some point make a New Year’s resolution.

But one thing I’ve come to notice is the difficulties we face as we go about these changes., Unfortunately, sometimes within the first month or two, people lose to these goals. The trials of life may catch up and rather than a hopeful target, it becomes a burden. But here’s another way to think of it- perhaps we begin relying on ourselves. Sometimes we begin to focus so much on the specifics that we lose sight of the bigger picture. God will be with you. We often see the depths of the waters, the heat of the fire, or the rush of the river, but may we also see that we are not alone.

As we enter this new year, what are things you are focused on? What changes are you wanting to make to become that “New Me”? And are you allowing God as the foundation for where you should go and how you should get there?

May we begin to focus on God Almighty knowing that His good and perfect plans will fall in place, He will lead us in the right path, and be the firm foundation to our lives as we trust Him.
