Keeping Score

by Jon Hathorn on November 16, 2020

“There is no one holy like the Lord, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God." I Samuel 2:2

Sports, games, competitions and contests - they can be a whole lot of fun.  Often the question comes up, "who's winning?"  If you understand the game, you probably know the score.  In football, it's six points for a touchdown, three for a field goal, two for a safety and so on.  In basketball it's one point for a free throw, two for a basket and three when it's behind the arc.  Since these games are timed, a team can simply work on holding on to the lead to win.  Other contests are not defined by time but by number of turns. For instance in baseball - there are innings - in the high jump or shot put both teams or individuals get the same number of opportunities. Another common type of contest is based on who can achieve a total first, like tennis or horseshoes.  The other most common type of competition is based on finishing in the shortest amount of time:  track, horse racing, and swimming are good examples of this.

Life is a little different, how do you know if you are winning?

Is it who has the most? NO

Is it who goes through life the fastest? NO

Is it who makes the least mistakes? NO

Is it who is the smartest? NO

We don't have scoreboards on our heads, but there are measurements for our success.

We are told to love the Lord our God will all our heart, all our soul and all our mind.  We are told to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are told to go into all the world and share the gospel.

How are we doing? What’s the score? Three practical ideas for you. Go to church and love being there each Sunday. Be kind and generous to your neighbors and family asking for God to have you emulate Christ. And lastly find yourself praying regularly for the lost and possibly even support a missionary who is reaching people in another part of the world.
