In The Game - 2 Samuel

by Jon Hathorn on September 20, 2021

David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years.”  2 Samuel 5:4

I am not 30 years old any longer, and in fact I am not 40 or even 50 - I am 60 years old. For just a moment I want you to think about your life as though it were a football game. You might be in the first quarter, second quarter or even the fourth quarter. It doesn’t matter what quarter you are in or what quarter I am in - the game is still going. Are you still playing or have you become a spectator - yet some have even chosen to quit the game all together.

In football some of the most exciting minutes occur during the final 2 minutes. Teams have incredible comebacks in these final two minutes. They have trick plays, a little more enthusiasm to never, never, never give up. They are not going to quit. As a famous baseball player Yogi Berra said in 1973, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Just think for a moment. Jesus’ greatest ministry was in the last week of His life- what an incredible 2 minute drill. One of Joshua’s greatest ministries was the final speech that he gave when he said, “Choose this day whom you will serve…as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”

Starting on the day that you chose to respond to the call of God until the day you die - serve God each and every day.

David didn’t live a perfect life by any means and yet in the book of Acts, he is known as a man after God’s own heart. This was not a statement about the first quarter of his life, nor just the second quarter - but the entire game of his life - from the opening kick off until the final whistle.

My prayer for you and my prayer for me is this very thought, “this is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.”  Enjoy serving until your last breath.
