Hope For Today

by Patrice Verhines on February 17, 2022

Some days don’t feel as productive as others…. or as successful… or like we’ve benefitted ourselves or anybody else… or as happy… or as joyful.  Have you ever had a day when you could relate to Peter’s weary and honest complaint?  “We worked hard all night and caught nothing.”  (Luke 5:5)

Most of us know the feeling of a sleepless night, of physical, emotional and spiritual weariness.  Life’s shadows come in many hues covering the gamut of the human condition: sickness, loss of employment, crises of faith, financial stress, broken relationships…the list goes on.

Today, though, is a new day!  God has graciously ordained that we are still here, and He is still in control.  Remember how Jesus asked Peter to go right back to fishing after that long and disappointing night?   Knowing Peter’s nets were empty, He invited Peter to trust His word.  He knew the mighty blessings He had stored up for Peter that day, and in the future.

Jesus knows, too, when our own hearts are weary.  Today He urges each of us, “It’s not too late to try again.”  If we heed His call today, just think of the possibilities!  May God bless and keep you today, in the shelter of His love.

Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word

Wait 'til the darkness is over
Wait 'til the tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow
After the darkness is gone

Whispering hope
Oh, how welcome Thy voice
Making my heart
In its sorrow rejoice

If in the dusk of the twilight
Dim be the region afar
Will not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star?

Then when the night is upon us
Why should the heart sink away?
When the dark midnight is over
Watch for the breaking of day

Whispering hope
Oh, how welcome Thy voice
Making my heart
In its sorrow rejoice
