God Made Me

by Heidi Verheyden on October 21, 2020

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

My oldest son and I were sitting down having a snack of Cheetos.  He loves those things especially the puffy ones.  He had Cheeto dust all over his face and fingers and he looked across the table and said to me, “I like how God made me.” My heart melted and I was instantly filled with joy as this little 5-year-old was so happy to be himself. I paused and I prayed that he would hold onto that attitude.

I began to dig a little bit into the mind of a five year old, to better understand  what this meant to him.  He said, "I like that I am fast, and can climb trees." He stopped and then looked up and said, "Mom you know that girls can’t climb trees."  That is probably because he has a little sister who is 18 months old. We laughed and kept chatting.

This precious conversation left such a great impression on me, in that he was not stating what he could do, rather than what he couldn't do.  He was simply listing how he was made.

I challenge you to do what I began to do in the days following these memorable comments. Instead of listing the things we can’t do because of how we are made, let's make a list of what we CAN do because of how uniquely you have been made. It is so easy to compare jobs, beauty, personalities and even find ourselves wishing we were someone else. However, in my heart I know that if I truly were someone else, I would not have the chance to be me. Let us not get so caught up in comparing ourselves with one another that we lose sight of the unique way God has made each of us. Let us proudly say I like how God made me and be able to confidently say the reasons why.
