Fannie has a Fountain

by Barbara Zumwalt on April 17, 2024

"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

My cat, Fannie, has a fountain. I fill it with water that has gone through a filter, and the fountain further cleans it with a charcoal filter. Its little waterfall makes a pleasing sound, drawing her to it. And she drinks from it.

Sometimes.

But I often find her seeking out her own source of water. There she is, perched on the toilet seat, lapping up her "fresh find."

(She learned this from my older cats, who were raised in a house with dogs -- it was not a behavior I taught or encouraged.)

And I shake my head in bemused bewilderment, watching her pride in finding her own source of refreshment.

And that gets me to thinking ...

How many things do I enjoy of my own devices that are like a toilet in comparison to the fountain of goodness God sets before me?

I imagine He often shakes His head in bemused bewilderment, too, over my stubbornness and pride, finding my own way, claiming self-righteous self-sufficiency.

I must surrender this need to be self-sufficient and rely completely on God's provision.

And not the toilet bowl offerings of my own finding.
