Down to Earth

by Justin Linscheid on May 30, 2023

Many people wonder if there is a God, what He might be like, or if God is even knowable. The Bible teaches that we can know God and what He is like because He wants Himself to be known. He has revealed Himself as a God who loves us and wants to be in a relationship with us. The Bible also specifically reveals God’s nature and character to us.

Although “no one can understand the greatness and majesty of God…” (Job 37:23-24), and “the wisdom and knowledge of God is beyond comprehension” (Romans 11:33), and “His love is too great to be understood fully” (Eph. 3:18-20), God has made Himself known in the person of Jesus Christ. On the one hand, God is far beyond our comprehension. But on the other hand, we can become His own children and know God personally through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12).

A very specific way that God has revealed Himself is through His Son Jesus Christ. John 1:1 & 14 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God… the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” John 1 teaches us that in Jesus Christ, God who created Heaven and Earth, came to Earth, and dwelled among us. In doing this Jesus revealed to us what God is like and how we can be in a good, healthy, life-giving relationship with God, our Creator.

If you find you are in a place where you have an honest longing to know God and what He is like I want to encourage you to read the Bible books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and look at the person of Jesus. Jesus is God as a human. Jesus is the manifestation of God in a form we can recognize and understand. Jesus reveals the character of God. As we look into God’s Word and pray to know God more, God will surely help us to know Him more because He wants a relationship with us even more than we want it with Him.
