Doubt

by Lise Bachman-Karnes on December 11, 2023

The following is my least favorite passage in the Bible. It scares me because I do have doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I have believed in God since I was a toddler, but doubts do creep in.

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like the wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”  James 1: 6-7

Sometimes I am afraid to ask because I have those doubts. I think they arose when I started studying anthropology in college. My mom warned me that that line of study could shake one’s faith, but I didn’t listen. What happens is that you see other religions and how important they are in those cultures and you wonder if your own faith is somehow no more important. Yet, when we learn about those other cultures, we realize that their leaders are buried and Jesus’s tomb is empty. That is the difference.

One of my favorite passages is:

“Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief.” Mark 9:24

When doubts creep in, that is my go-to verse. Also, remembering answered prayer in my life and the lives of others is very convicting. I am on the prayer chain so I have many opportunities to see answered prayer.

I am writing this in the hopes that other people who struggle with doubt will be comforted. Hallelujah, He is risen! God is alive and can hear your prayers. Share your doubts with Him and allow God to reassure you.
