Beauty in Thorns

by Casey Journagan on May 28, 2020

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." Romans 1:20

I was working in my yard the other day pruning some shrubs. As I was working on a pair of shrubs I noticed a rose bush beginning to grow. In the midst of rocks, weeds, and shrubs, a three foot tall chute began to grow. There were no flowers, only thorns. It reminded me of James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when-ever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything (NIV)." You see this rose chute is going in some harsh and hostile soil, and in the present isn't beautiful. Given time this single thorny chute will give way to a bush filled with beautiful flowers. For many of us right now life is in a bit of turmoil. The trial for you may be coming from a loss of income, boredom, loneliness, or even something else, but given time the trials we are going through now will give way to something beautiful when God is ready. Don't be so overwhelmed by the present that you miss the beauty when God presents it. as it says in Matthew 6:26 "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they (NIV)?" Trust God and wait on His timing.
