Anticipation

by Harry Ulep on December 25, 2023

"And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

Many families have different traditions as we enter the holiday season. Some like to go out caroling together, some do gift exchanges with family, while others simply enjoy the gathering of family and loved ones for a meal. One of our family traditions is to celebrate on Christmas Eve. Our evening would be filled with games, gingerbread house making competitions, karaoke, food, and lots of laughter. The one thing we would hold off on is the opening of presents. Part of our tradition is opening presents on Christmas day, but since many kids can’t wait until the next day, we would open them at midnight. It was the most anticipated part to any of our Christmas Eve celebrations because kids knew that the gifts were worth more than any of the prizes or games that they’ve played up to that point. All I can picture is the joy in their eyes as they received gifts that some have been asking for all year and the excitement behind finally getting to the thing they’ve been waiting all night for.

As I reminisce on these memories, I can only imagine the feelings that some of the people experienced in anticipation of this long awaited King. From the times of Isaiah and hearing the prophecies of the promised Messiah to the gospels and the sharing of good news of great joy for all the people, there was an anticipation and a hope that is found in Jesus Christ. And while this season may bring about various emotions, feelings of overwhelmingness, hurt, loneliness, while others have joy, excitement, and jubilation, may we use this holiday season to respond with a heart of worship. May we remember that the promised King whom so many wait for HAS COME! “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”! Christmas is about the celebration of Jesus, our Savior, the long awaited and anticipated Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

May we take time today, in the midst of the busyness, the distractions, the emotions, and everything that can come with the holiday season, and give thanks to Jesus, the true reason for the season. Spend time in prayer, reading scripture with your loved ones, and remember that we may now find everything our lives need in Him.

Prayer:  Father God, may we not lose sight of You this Christmas season. In the midst of the busyness and all that this day may hold, may we start with a heart of gratitude for You, the beauty behind this day, and what it is You came to do. Fix our eyes on what is important and help us remember the Why of Christmas. May we give You the worship and praise through it all. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
