One of the things I have enjoyed since retiring is aqua aerobics. I have gotten to know quite a few people, but there are a few of us who have formed a closer bond. When I see new people my first reaction is to be annoyed because the pool will be more crowded. One time recently one new gal positioned herself right where I usually stand. That meant that I was not in my usual group. Frustrating, right? Yet, despite this initial reaction, I was reminded that I have to make myself be friendly and welcoming. After all, I was once new and was greeted warmly.
I think the same thing happens in church. How do we feel when someone sits in “our pew”? Then during greeting time, we have to greet people we don’t know. Again, I have to push myself a little to be friendly and welcoming. Fortunately, my son says I have a killer smile.
The point is this—God commands us to be welcoming and we often develop new friendships as a result. I thank God that He is welcoming toward us.
“Anyone who welcomes you welcomes Me, and anyone who welcomes Me welcomes the one who sent Me.” Matthew 10:40
“Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” Romans 15:7.
I have gained many valuable friendships as a result. Just following the nudge of the Holy Spirit has led to much joy.
