"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house upon a rock." Matthew 7:24
Aurora, New York is a small town in upstate New York and known mostly for being the home of Wells College. The town is on Cayuga Lake. It is the town where my aunt lives. It has a post office, a little market, two restaurants, a drug store, and a library. There are no traffic lights. But there is this one yellow house in town that I always thought was the coolest house. A lady named Ann lived there. I loved the house because of the floor. It wiggled a little bit when you walked through it. I didn't understand at the time, but the floor was right on the ground. I mean the boards were right on the dirt. The reason the floor wiggled and bounced is because the dirt under the boards had been washing away. Well, Ann eventually needed to have the entire floor replaced, because there was not a solid foundation.
You and I know many people who have built their lives on their good looks, their wallets, their cars, their careers, their skills, or something else that was not a solid foundation. Our life must have a solid foundation and we must trust lasting things to be the firm stronghold of our lives. Some people learn about their faulty and weak foundations the hard way, when things collapse. Others have heard about and seen the strength of a foundation in someone's life and want what they have.
Jesus Christ is a firm foundation, and one of my favorite songs that speaks to this is "The Solid Rock" by Edward Mote. The first verse and chorus go like this:
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
but wholly lean on Jesus name
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
