The Power & Comfort of the Word of God

by Cameron Pannabecker on May 23, 2023

After leading the Sunday School class on the Truth Project, produced by Focus on the Family, some over-arching themes came to the forefront.  There are two constants that repeatedly surfaced; God’s Word is good and consistent, and the world is consistently at odds with the nature and character of God.

Gen. 1:26- Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

John 1:1-3 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.”

Written hundreds of years apart, with so many threads woven together in between, and yet the Word ties together this constant:  God created us in the image of the Trinity, and Christ was at the center of it.  No ambiguity, no deviation, and complete clarity.  God, Christ, has breathed His Spirit into everything from before the beginning.

In this example of the consistency of Scripture, the Truth Project reveals a key element in the relationship of God and man:  He is at the center of everything.  Family?  God is the central element of a successful family.  Government?  God and His values are at the center of a successful and just governmental system.  Business?  God and His example of relationships is the ultimate model for business and labor to prosper.  On and on it goes.  Successful relationships and systems model the relationship of a triune God to His creation, even to the means by which we have been redeemed in Christ.

John 15:18-19 -  “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

The Truth Project makes many great points, but one of the best is that if you want to know what God says about a subject, just look to the opposite of what the world thinks is best.

  • What does the world say about the need for fidelity?
  • What does the world say about the need for absolute truth and consistency?
  • What does the world say about submitting ourselves to each other?
  • What does the world say about personal responsibility?
  • What does the world say about how we came to be here?
  • What does the world say about our ability to save ourselves?
  • What does the world say about men and women?
  • What does the world say about justice?
  • What does the world say about power?

The list goes on to almost a ridiculous level.  God’s Word, God’s values and very character is under attack at every turn, as the world spirals out of control.  The more the world encounters God’s solid, unwavering truths, the more absurd the attacks of the world.  We have arrived at a point on this spectrum whereby about half of our governmental leaders won’t even admit to there being a scientific definition as to what a man and woman are.  Think about that in light of Genesis.

The Truth Project is full of these two themes, the power and comfort of the complete, inerrant, and literal Word of God, versus the strange, ever-changing, and perverse world that is at odds with His Word.  Through it all we find we are grateful, eternally grateful, for the Word and the One who has given it to us.

I recommend you find the Truth Project online, or borrow or buy the DVDs, and spend some quality time watching the series.  They can be found on YouTube, or you can follow this link to session five that will introduce you to the series: https://www.veoh.com/watch/v28853634jFGEDrDG

Let us go forward with the knowledge and comfort that His Word is good, His Word is trustworthy, and His Word is complete.
