“The attribute by which God perfectly and eternally knows all things that can be known- past, present and future. God knows how best to attain to his desired ends.” The New International Dictionary of the Bible
Do you envy people who know a lot, and whose memories are really good? Like the Jeopardy winners--- it’s AMAZING what they know and remember. Scholars that can recite volumes. Actors that remember copious lines from their scripts. There are those who remember people’s names- the FIRST time they hear them! How do they do that? I’d love to address someone by name every time, it’s so much more personal…. if only I could remember it! It’s embarrassing! And then if only I could remember where I was when something happened….it’s right on the tip of my tongue. Really it is. But it got lost in my brain somewhere…. And then, of course, why in the heck did I go into this room?
The good news is that I know I’m not the only one with imperfect knowledge or memory. It seems part of the human condition. The BETTER news is that God does not ever forget and He is omniscient- He knows everything. He knows things before we do, He knows how things will happen and play out. He knows our eternity.
1 John 3:20: “For God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything.”
Isaiah 28:29: “All this also comes from the Lord Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.”
Psalm 147:5: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.” You can rest in the thought that we are loved by a God who does know everything, far beyond our comprehension. He has a plan for our lives.
Psalm 139:1-4: “You have searched me, Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely O Lord.”
Psalm 139:15: "My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be."
Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Isn’t it totally amazing to think that God knows us from the inside out? We can bring anything to Him in prayer as He already knows- and I mean really knows- our hearts. He’s just waiting for us to talk to Him. I’m not sure I can really wrap my head around all that. What God can discern and know is truly beyond me, but that’s ok. I don’t need to understand what I cannot fathom. God’s got this and I trust Him. He loves us as we are- imperfect memories and all- and wants our lives to be fruitful. Praise God that He remembers, He knows, He is mighty, He loves us, and He works for our good. Amen!
