I love contemporary Christian music and listen to it in the car and at home. It brings Christian concepts to mind and is worshipful. My current favorite is You Can Rest by Hilary Scott. It was very comforting when I was having health problems.
That being said, I also love the hymns of the faith. I remember as a kid belting out Rock of Ages on our way home from church, much to my brother’s dismay and my parents’ approval. I really enjoy it when we sing one of the hymns as part of the worship service. When that was the norm, I probably learned more about the Christian faith through the hymns and choral anthems than I did reading the Bible. One of my favorite lines is “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love, Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above” from Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing which we do sing occasionally.
Recently, a hymn came to mind that we sang in my home church as a child. All I could remember was “He is Alpha and Omega, He the source the ending He.” It was really bugging me and then I remembered “Of the Father’s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be” with the help of a hymnbook.
Speaking of hymn books, I have a small collection. The hymn book I grew up with in the Presbyterian Church was created by many contributors but my grandfather was the chairman. No wonder I love the hymns. I know many of you do too. The Hymn Sings we have had touch that part of my soul. What is your favorite?
It is wonderful that we can praise God and learn about Him through many different means. Our God is a beautiful and creative God.
