People joke about C and E (Christmas and Easter) Christians but I find that there are a lot of people who only come to church on Christmas which leaves them to only half of the story. I think the focus on Baby Jesus is more palatable than thinking about the suffering leading up to the resurrection.
Coincidentally one of the songs that the Stockton Singers (part of the Stockton Chorale) is singing in their Holiday concert is a song called Sans Day Carol which addresses Christmas and Easter both:
Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk and
Mary bore Jesus who was wrapped up in silk
And Mary bore Jesus Christ our savior for to be
And the first tree in the green wood it was the holly
Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass,
And Mary bore Jesus who died on the cross
Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal
And Mary bore Jesus who died for us all.
And Mary bore Jesus Christ our savior for to be
Now the holly bears a berry as blood is it red
Then trust we our savior who rose from the dead.
So, as we are enjoying the Christmas season with lights and music and food and gifts, let us thank God for His presence and that He has made a way, through Jesus, to rescue us from our sins and make us ready for Heaven.
