Slices of the Pie

by Alyssa Linscheid on March 22, 2021

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”  Luke 5:16

Isn’t pie a great food? It’s so versatile and can be adapted to any occasion, season, or holiday. Pie not only tastes great but it can also be a great analogy for life. A whole pie can represent all of a person’s time and energy and the slices are how much is delegated to various aspects of life. For example, someone recently mentioned to me that when you’re a single adult you have more flexibility with your pie slices than a married person or a person with kids does. The more responsibilities you have, the more slices of pie are consistently given away.

The thing about pies is that there are a limited number of slices, no single pie has unlimited slices just like no person has unlimited time or energy in this life. Our pie can be divided into time with God, family, friends, work, rest, etc. How we divide these slices is very important.

The Bible tells us that Jesus delegated a slice of the pie to rest and prayer. Luke 5:16 says, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” He knew that He needed to spend alone time with the Father in order to rejuvenate. Jesus could’ve spent every waking hour doing ministry, but as a human He willingly took on human limitations and needed rest.

Also, if we look at the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42, we see that Mary devoted a slice of the pie to sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to Him. In that moment, Martha was too concerned about serving and preparing the meal to enjoy what was right in front of her. She wasn’t devoting a large enough slice to resting and just spending time with the Lord.

So how are our slices looking? Too big of a slice for work? No time with God? Is there a slice for the Sabbath? Let’s make sure that our family and time with God don’t get the crumbs. There’s limited slices and unlimited mouths in life. Everything in this life is hungry for our attention. Don’t let important things in your life go hungry. Now that this has been said, I’m going to go get some pie now and reflect on my own slices of the pie of life!
