Route 66- Jeremiah: A Call to Faithful Dependence on the Lord

by Justin Linscheid on January 24, 2022

Jeremiah is the longest book in the entire Bible. Some books like Psalms and Isaiah have more chapters, but Jeremiah has the most words. A book of its length is packed full of much insightful wisdom and valuable truth. On a whole, Jeremiah warns Judah against impending judgement because they have forsaken the Lord and no longer have their trust in Him. Leaving the Lord to instead place our trust in other things always leads us down a path of destruction.

Yet in the midst of declaring judgement, Jeremiah has many offerings of profound hope. Despite the people’s wickedness, God has been immensely patient and still offers hope. He declares that a new way of life with Him is possible. It is a life of true satisfaction and peace. It is a life of hope, renewal and personal transformation.

Despite the amazing life that God offers, Jeremiah’s message is rejected, time and time again. Jeremiah weeps over this. He weeps over the brokenness of this world and the stubbornness of the human heart. His tears are an embodiment of the tears of God. God weeps over our sinfulness and longs for us to turn to Him and trust Him. He knows that this is what is best for us and longs for us to experience true life on His terms.

Consider a couple key verses from Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 2:23 says, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Are we placing our hope and trust in things that “cannot hold water”? Jeremiah invites us to trust in the Lord, the one who is our true source of life. So many things in this world deceptively offer false hope. Instead, trust in the Lord. He will not fail you.

In Jeremiah 29:11, the Lord declares, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I believe this verse reveals the heart of God. He is for you! He wants what is truly best for you! This might not look like the prosperity you imagined or a life of immediate gratification. Yet trusting the Lord is the life that is truly prosperous, good, and full of true hope.

The book of Jeremiah is a warning against rejecting God and the truth that He proclaims. Take a moment today to ask the Lord to help you be receptive to Him and His Word in your life.
