Resting In His Holiness

by Alyssa Linscheid on April 26, 2021

“No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no rock like our God.”  1 Samuel 2:2

What do you think of when you hear that God is holy? A lot of people including myself often think of Him being morally pure and righteous. This is true but there’s more to it than that. This term is so common in our Christian language that over time we can say it or sing it casually without really thinking about what it means.

In Hebrew, holy means “set apart.” God is unique and there’s no one like Him. He’s the only perfect being and the only one who is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. He’s the only one who can create life and the only one worthy of worship.

I recently heard a worship song with a line that says “I find my rest in His holiness” and that got me thinking, how do we find rest in the fact that He’s set apart? I tell myself and others that I trust God in difficult situations but does that always transform the way I look at life? There’s so much in this world that we can try and find our rest in: family, friends, vacations, television, retirement plans, etc. While many of these things can be good, none of them can truly provide the rest our souls are searching for. 1 Samuel 2:2 says, “No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no rock like our God.” We can rest knowing that no one else can be our stable rock and foundation like He can. He won’t change no matter how difficult life gets.

In Revelation 4:8 we see the four living creatures saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” They say this day and night, never stopping. They could be saying any number of praises but they choose to say that God is holy. They are amazed and in awe of His uniqueness.

Our souls can find rest in the One who is all knowing, all powerful, and everywhere at once. There’s no reason to look anywhere else!
