Remember, Remember Not

by Marcos Schultz on June 29, 2024

David has three suggestions for God, about what to remember and what to forget.

  1. Remember Your mercy & love.
  2. Don’t remember how I blew it so much in my past.
  3. Do remember me!
Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me
for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!
Psalm 25.6-7
Perhaps a bit nervy, telling God what to remember and what to forget.
But David delighted in that kind of relationship with His God!
And amazingly, God delights in that kind of relationship with you and I.
Elsewhere, Psalms 103:11-12 tells us:
“For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

What tends to be what you remember first and foremost? Your sin? Your shortcomings? Your faults? Or that God knows you, loves you, and has immeasurable mercy for you?
