"Rather clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ...." Romans 13:14
This might sound pretty funny but many years ago I heard a guy say that the whole world puts their shoes and socks on in a certain order. A sock on one foot, then a sock on the other foot. Then one shoe on one foot and the other shoe on the other foot. And the reason why this is important is because if there was a fire or a flood or some other emergency - you would not want to look like you didn’t know how to dress. I decided to try an experiment, and for a month I would try it differently. I would put on a sock and a shoe on one foot and then put on the other foot a sock and then a shoe. I actually did this each day for about two months, and then I happened to fall back into what everyone else does.
I share this story because every morning we choose which clothes to put on. It is a choice of how we dress. Sometimes a mom or dad picks out what a child is going to wear and sometimes a wife picks shirts and pants out for her husband to wear. The point is we put on clothes each day.
This verse is speaking about the attitude that we choose to put on each day. Will I put on anger and frustration? Will I put on selfish ambition and greed. Will I put on an attitude of Jesus - practicing humility and gratefulness? Putting on has the concept of wrapping ourselves in something. We should choose be wrapped in the love of Jesus, accepting the responsibility of being an ambassador of His. It is an intentional choice, to adorn ourselves as a follower of Jesus. Wanting to be gracious, wanting to pass compliments, wanting to be an encourager are all a matter of choice to make.
Let’s clothe ourselves each day with Jesus and become imitators of Him.
