Our God, the Beautiful

by Justin Linscheid on April 22, 2021

This morning I went out into my backyard just to enjoy a little fresh morning air. The air was crisp, cool and refreshing. Pink blossoms were beautifully decorating our peach tree, a sign of juicy peaches to come. The neighbor’s tree was full of brightly colored rounded oranges, nestled within dark green leaves. The clouds in the sky were painted with a pinkish-purple hue as the sun slowly lifted above the horizon, a bright new day. The grass was sprinkled with jewels of morning dew. The dirt was damp and sent forth a rustic, earthy fragrance, like fresh rain. Countless birds were chirping and singing their morning melodies.

As far as backyards go, our backyard is very ordinary. Yet still, the fingerprints of our beautiful God were clear to see:

Psalm 19 says:

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
    The skies display His craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
    night after night they make Him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
    their voice is never heard.

Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
    and their words to all the world.”

 Psalm 8 says:

“When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers—
    the moon and the stars You set in place—
what are mere mortals that You should think about them,
    human beings that You should care for them?”

 The song “America The Beautiful” says:

“Oh beautiful, for spacious skies
     For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
     Above the fruited plain”

Truly, from sea to shining sea, God has shed His undeserved grace on us all. He is the origin of such beauty. Psalm 19 in particular speaks to both general and specific revelation we have from God. God has generally revealed Himself to us through all that He has made. He has specifically revealed Himself to us through His Word, His Son, and Presence in our lives. The fingerprints of God are all over for us to see. This world reveals the beauty of our great God. Psalm 8 offers us the wonder of humble amazement. Who are we that such a good and beautiful God would care for us? Who are we that He would create so much beauty for us to experience and enjoy?

I encourage you to see the craftsmanship and beauty of this world as God’s handiwork. When you are in the mountains, the beach, or simply in your own yard, consider that every good and perfect gift is from our Heavenly Father. Who are we Lord, that You would make this world for us to experience and enjoy with You? I’m so glad You did.
