You’re probably familiar with the expression, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Before we went to Spain and Portugal we had several intensive rehearsals. At those rehearsals we met up with some Delta students who were going with us. One in particular rubbed me the wrong way. She had a mass of curly black hair, but had dyed the top layer cherry red. She had a silly nickname and acted kind of silly. When our director asked her to sing one of the solos, I didn’t know what to expect. She executed it beautifully.
The other students also dyed their hair unusual colors right before we left. I wondered what our audiences would think of their bright colors.
These students were quite a contrast to the Stockton Chorale members who are mostly retirees. However, as we spent time with them, we noted that though they were having fun they didn’t take it too far. They were not too loud and were where they were supposed to be at the appropriate time.
This was an experience that taught me about pre-conceived notions. The old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover” rang true to me. If I am judging like this, I am not often focused on loving and showing grace at the same time. Have you had similar experiences?
