Gideon, fearful and hiding from the Midianites, was threshing a handful of wheat in an unexpected place (the wine press) to hide from them what he was doing.
"And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, oh valiant warrior.'" Judges 6:12
Doubtless, Gideon saw himself as he was: fearful, oppressed, downtrodden. But God saw him as he was meant to be: a mighty man of valor.
God sees us as the very best of who He created us to be. That’s why fearful, sniveling Gideon was hailed as a mighty warrior. With God’s help, this is what Gideon became (briefly, but that’s another story).
We need to hear how God describes us to see ourselves as He intended us to be. Then we can rely on Him to help us become that person.
