“But he answered and said, “it is written, 'man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4
It seems like when we go camping, we eat a lot more food and the food smells so much better than when we are at home. That’s probably because we are so hungry because of all the hiking and being at the higher altitudes. It doesn’t really matter that the pancakes aren’t perfect, or the coffee has a few grounds in each cup, or that the hot dog was cooked on a stick that was found on the ground and the spot where the hot dog was placed wasn’t sanitary. Everything (well let’s say almost everything) just tastes great when camping. Another example is when the early morning bacon smell hits your nose and your tastebuds. The food is fabulous when we are in the great outdoors.
I happen to be in the mountains as I write this, and I am currently wondering if God made some sort of change in the chemistry of food where there is an actual taste concentration change to the actual food or our tastebuds as one gets higher in altitude. Now that probably is a ridiculous thought, but I am simply supporting the idea of how wonderful food is in the outdoors and even more special in the mountains.
It seems as though “feeding on the Word of God” often happens best when we are in a special place. That might be the chair by the window, an overstuffed chair and a cup of coffee, a bench in the backyard, or some other special spot.
Another special place for me is being in church and anticipating some truth. I usually sit in the same spot, not because I am OCD, but because I will find less new things to interrupt my thinking. In other words, I have already looked around.
Wherever your special spot is, may you realize you need that food, we need to be free of distractions, and need to spend time with God Almighty.
