Filling Our Minds With God's Word

by Justin Linscheid on July 06, 2024

This world is so noisy. I don’t just mean the sounds of planes, trains, cars, boats, conversations, and other audible sounds. I mean the noise of distraction in our lives. The sound of TV, social media, our to do lists, the news, magazines, and the plethora of other tasks that often fill our minds.

Psalm 1 describes a life that is rooted in God in contrast to a life not lived with God. One line in particular stands out to me when it describes the person who is grounded in God and walking fruitfully with Him in life. It says of this person, “They delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night.”

Now I don’t mean these next questions to discourage or condemn you but simply put them forth for your reflection: “Does your life reflect that you delight in God’s word such that you find yourself thinking about it frequently? Is there perhaps other “input/noise” that is more prominent in your ears and mind?”

The current of this world pulls us away from delighting in God’s word. We so easily spend hours delighting in TV, magazines, entertaining books, listening to or reading news, browsing the internet, following sports, and mere moments in God’s word. Are we inadvertently “sitting in the seat of scoffers” in doing so?

There is a simple old fashion truth put forth in this Psalm: A fruitful life with God is fueled by joy in hearing and receiving God’s voice through Scripture.

So even if you don’t feel like it, by faith, set an intention to put some of the other noise aside today to instead spend more time in God’s word. Ask God to give you a fresh outpouring of delight and joy in hearing Him speak to you and sensing Him lead you in life. He will hear you and He will help you.
