Expectations of Bedside Manner

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

Hospitals are different. I’m not talking about the building, but the environment, the people, and the stories written on the faces of patients and visitors alike. People use the phrase, “I have to go to the hospital” rather than “I get to go to the hospital” while smiling. I don’t know many people who want to spend any more time than necessary there except for the employees, medical folks, and people who are earning money.

I’ve observed that this place tends to bring out the best and the worst in people. Some do the herculean task of caring for people who need their care, which often goes unappreciated. Then there are others hurting and scared. This frequently “fleshes” out as anger and fear. They don’t want to be there and they’re fearful of an uncertain future.

Most are willing to help, serve, and care for others who are hurting and afraid, but good intentions regularly fall short. Here is my encouragement for us all today. Lean into the five “B’s.” Be present. Be supportive. Be inspiring. Be creative. Be thoughtful.
