Examining our Sources of Influence

by Justin Linscheid on September 27, 2023

Someone recently shared with me that they have a news app that pulls from multiple sources of information. It pulls from many major reporting resources and puts the information in front of them. Suddenly it dawned on him how many different sources are vying to be our source of information and direction on a daily basis. On top of the various news sources that push information our way, social media grants many a platform to push forth their thoughts about various issues. We are living in a world of vast amounts of information sources that are competing for an influential place in our lives. If they can become the primary source of information in a person’s life, then they have essentially become their master and leader, shaping their thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and actions.

In light of this, we reflected on a popular piece of wisdom from God’s Word. Proverbs 3:5-7 tells us, “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil!” (The Message translation).

Followers of Jesus Christ give God this first place of information and influence in their lives. Even when things do not make sense to us, we need to learn to trust God over and above what we might be initially thinking or what might be a popular but incorrect perspective. God will guide and lead us in the truth as we diligently submit to Him in all of our ways.

Who is guiding your path? What is primarily influencing your thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and actions? Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Go to God and His word first and above all other sources of information in this world and allow Him to be your influence.
