“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”Psalms 37:4
Consider the “d” words of this scripture. The word delight puts a smile on our face - A favorite food, a favorite TV show, or a favorite place to visit. We simply enjoy them, we have memories of them, and because of those memories, we desire to experience them. Maybe it's ice cream, The Andy Griffith Show, and the beach or maybe it's a cup of coffee, an old rerun you've watched several times, and a recliner with a blanket by the fire in the winter time.
A definition of delight – something that provides great pleasure.
A definition of desire – a strong wanting to have something or to have something happen. A word study of the origins of “desire” shows that the basic meaning is “of the father”.
Have you ever heard the song lyrics “Break my heart for what breaks Yours”? God cares for every need. You and I cannot. In His wisdom, God chose to take a piece of His heart and put into our hearts. For this reason I may feel very deeply for the welfare of the elderly while you want to care for the homeless or children, or women’s rights, or the local church. The list goes on to cover different areas of need. The point is we have different areas of interest but the motivation originates from the same Spirit. When we take delight in the Lord – taking great pleasure in our relationship – we experience the great satisfaction of serving others. You and I may have the same spiritual gift of hospitality, but I use it in the area of serving the elderly while you open your heart to children.
Return to the scripture; do not lose sight of the command, “Take delight in the Lord.” The relationship with Jesus comes first.
Luke 12:31 “But seek His kingdom and these things will be given to you as well.”
Here's a Prayer for today: "Lord, I indeed pray that You break my heart for what breaks Yours. Be with me each step of my journey as I seek to honor You and to serve You. Be with me on my journey as I serve others. All this to Your glory, Amen."
