“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2
Kinnor: an ancient Hebrew lyre, the musical instrument of King David. He was said to have played a 10-string lyre (“kinnor” in Hebrew). The ancient historian Josephus described the kinnor as having 10 strings, made from a sheep's small intestine, and played with a plectrum (pick). The Book of Samuel notes that David played the kinnor "with his fingers” (meaning, used as a solo instrument).
First and Second Samuel and First and Second Chronicles contain stories of David who, as a young shepherd and throughout his life, played his lyre or harp, composed songs and sang to God. His lyrics covered the gamut of human emotions and experiences, chronicling triumphs and losses, joyous closeness to God, agonizing separation from God born of sin, and everything in between. The Psalms contain a rich treasury of many of his works, ancient, yet contemporary in their universal truths.
One lesson that shines brightly in the life of David: the man used his God-given gift for his own edification, for the benefit of others, and all to the glory of God.
We’re all tied to the lives of God’s chosen people through the ages (yes, even King David!). Like those we encounter in the scriptures, God has chosen you and me too. We’re all members of the same family, the family of God. He has uniquely gifted each of us to live God-directed lives in the presence of a world that is watching.
How will your individual gifts and abilities “sing” to the Lord and be seen by others as you walk through today?
Prayer: Let us be an extension of Your love, Lord, along the path You’ve set before us today. May we be thrilled to be a blessing to others through the work of the Holy Spirit in us, and may we bring glory to You. Amen.
