Personally, I have always disliked crosses with the crucified Christ on them. For one thing, I don’t like gore and they are often gory. The other reason is a little loftier. We worship a risen Christ. Therefore, the cross should be empty as His suffering is completed.
“He is not here: He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee: ‘the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’” Luke 24: 6-7
However, during this season of Lent, we do consider the suffering which Christ underwent on our behalf. Especially as we are in this week that commemorates Christ’s crucifixion, we are especially reminded of Christ’s suffering on our behalf. I am not suggesting that we should all wear crosses which depict Christ crucified, but maybe when we see them, we should pause and take a moment to thank the Lord for His sacrifice on our behalf. Then we will truly rejoice when Easter arrives.
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. ‘You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.” Mark 16:6
Christ suffered what He did for you and me. It is amazing that He loved us to this extent. May we reflect on this especially at this time and give thanks to God for His amazing grace and love.
“The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
