“Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; each one was fulfilled” Jos. 21:45
We live in a world today where talk is cheap, so when it comes to business transactions, as a rule of thumb it’s always a good idea to “get it in writing.” Thankfully, our covenant –making God includes promises not only specific to Israel but promises written throughout the Bible that all believers can claim. It’s as if the Lord has given us a promissory note -– a signed legal document containing a written promise to pay a stated sum to a specified person or the bearer at a specified date or on demand (Oxford Languages).
In a January 15 devotional from Morning and Evening, Charles Spurgeon says: “God’s promises were never meant to be thrown aside as wastepaper; he intended that they should be used. God’s gold is not miser’s money but is minted to be traded with. Nothing pleases our Lord better than to see His promises put in circulation; He loves to see His children bring them up to Him and say, ‘Lord, do as you have said.’ We glorify God when we plead His promises.”
One site online notes that there are 8,810 promises in the Scriptures. James Montgomery Boice comments that Philippians 4:19 may be the greatest promise in the entire Bible because it includes all the other promises in itself: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (ESV). Whether our need is for salvation, assurance, forgiveness, wisdom, courage, insight, guidance, discernment, strength, healing, faith, hope, peace, joy…
I like the summary at HBCharlesjr.com-- identifying
The sovereign Banker: “My God...”
The insurance policy: “will supply...”
The check amount: “every need of yours...”
The account balance: “according to his riches in glory...”
The check signatory: “in Christ Jesus.”
Which of the thousands of promises in the Bible comfort you most? God is waiting for you to cash in!
