I recently bought a fitness watch to track my steps and monitor my daily activity. At work, I’ve made it a habit to check my progress, seeing my steps as a small victory toward staying active. But the other day, after a particularly busy day, I realized I had forgotten to turn my watch on. For a moment, I felt disappointed—almost as if the steps I had taken didn’t count.
Then it struck me: the steps mattered not because they were tracked but because they were taken. And in that moment, I felt God remind me of a deeper truth. Spiritually, it’s not about whether others see or applaud our good deeds or whether we keep a record of them ourselves. What truly matters is that we are doing good out of love for God and others.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:3-4, “But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”
God doesn’t need a "spiritual step tracker" to know the good we’re doing. He sees every kind word, every act of service, every prayer offered in secret. What pleases Him is not the recognition but the faithfulness of walking in His ways. What truly matters is that God is shaping us into people who love and do good, not for a trophy or recognition, but because it’s who we’ve become.
So today, take steps of kindness, mercy, and love not to be seen or counted, but simply because they honor the God who calls us to walk in His love. Those steps, even when unnoticed, are the ones that truly matter.
