Dolphins! I love Dolphins. They’re smart, they are beautiful, and they are strong. I was able to swim with them on a vacation and it was The.Best.Time.Ever! They are smooth, they talk, they play, they jump. The power in their tails is unbelievable and totally awesome. To be up close with them was absolutely magical. Like a little piece of heaven on earth. A moment of pure joy and delight. I even earned myself a moniker of “Dolphin Girl”!
How many other things in this world seem like a little piece of heaven? Seeing a city at night with all its lights. Gazing at the stars on a crystal clear night. A cup of coffee (for some of us!). A newborn baby - clean and snuggly and sleeping in your arms. Sunrises, sunsets. Those amazing days when everything is perfect and right. Those times of quiet with God that seem set apart and holy. Doesn’t it make you wonder what Heaven is really like? Is God sharing with us just a little taste of the glory that is to come?
We have Biblical glimpses, but glimpses they are. The total picture has got to be beyond comprehension and so amazing that we can’t know it all until we get there. But the good news is that we have an eternal home that we can look forward to. Jesus has prepared a place. John 14:2-3 – “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.” We know from scripture that heaven is a place of unimaginable love, of light, of beauty like gemstones, and songs of praise like we have never heard before. Revelation 5:13- “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them saying: “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power for ever and ever!” Can you even begin to imagine every creature singing together?
God in His great mystery and love, shares glimpses of His Glory so that we can believe, we can hope and we can have joy in this world and the world to come. I like to think that heaven, just like the dolphins, is so magnificent that it can’t contain itself. Sometimes a little taste of it leaks out and leaps for joy and places a smile in my heart.
