A Heart to Serve, Even in Hardship

by Alyssa Linscheid on December 28, 2024

A couple of months ago, a patient I was caring for during her chemo session handed me a card. She’d never met me before but had come prepared, with a stack of cards in her purse, each one already written out to thank whoever cared for her. She was facing such an intense journey, yet she had chosen to direct her worry and anxiety toward gratitude.
Her simple act touched me. In a season where most would feel overwhelmed, she trusted God to send caring people her way and was ready to thank them before they even arrived. Her faith in God’s faithfulness reminded me of Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Her heart of gratitude gave her a quiet peace and a witness of God’s presence in her life. This small act reminded me that even in uncertainty, we can choose gratitude, trusting that God will meet us with His love and faithfulness. She chose to make her faith in God and her desire to serve others bigger than her suffering, and that choice left an impact on me.
