The Heart of a Servant

“Condescend to all the weaknesses and infirmities of your fellow-creatures, cover their frailties, love their excellencies, encourage their virtues, relieve their wants, rejoice in their prosperities, compassionate their distress, receive their friendship, overlook their unkindness, forgive their malice, be a servant of servants, and condescend to do the lowest offices to the lowest of mankind.” — William Law
True Christian love is humble. It doesn’t elevate itself above others but stoops low to serve, just as Jesus did when He washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:12-17). William Law’s words remind us that to live like Christ, we must embrace the weaknesses of others, extend grace for their faults, and serve selflessly—even when it costs us.
Jesus showed us this kind of love when He came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). He met people in their brokenness, forgave their sins, and loved them unconditionally. We are called to follow His example by being a servant of servants, offering compassion, forgiveness, and care to everyone, regardless of their status or behavior.
Today, look for ways to love others in humility. Cover a fault with grace. Offer kindness where it’s undeserved. Serve someone in need, no matter how small the task. In doing so, you reflect the heart of Christ and reveal His love to the world.
Only through communion with the God who loves us perfectly can we find the power and strength to love others as we are called to love.
