Cuts That Heal

A circumcision made without hands
Colossians 2:11b

By putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ
Colossians 2:11c

Yet, my ego feels the pain.
My fear resists.
The everydayness of it wears me down.
My know-it-all head rebels.
My stubbornness seduces me with the promise of a better, easier way.

But I traveled that path for many a year—
the path more traveled. That dead end path.

Now I know better.
I’ve seen where self leads.
I’ve felt the ache of its empty promises unravel.

Now I am learning to lay it down.
To place myself beneath the surgeon hand of Christ,
whose every cut is mercy,
and every wound, a step toward healing.
