From the earliest days of the Church, surrendering control and embracing self-denial have been central to growing in Christ. This mindset is radically different from the values of our culture, which glorifies self-expression, independence, and instant gratification. Yet Jesus calls us to a different way: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).
Our culture says, “Pursue what makes you happy,” but Christ says, “Surrender to what makes you holy.” This surrender isn’t easy—it challenges our pride and forces us to trust God’s provision instead of our own efforts. But when we let go of what we think we want, God gives us what we truly need to mature in Him: peace, wisdom, and a deeper relationship with our Savior.
As A.W. Tozer once said, “The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven’t yet come to the end of themselves. We’re still trying to give orders, and interfering with God’s work within us.”
What is God asking you to surrender today? Lay it down, trusting that His plans for you are not only good—they are perfect.
God please grant us strength to trust you in all things knowing that you love us more than we love ourselves.
