Serving in Secret

“The flesh whines against service but screams against hidden service. It strains and pulls for honor and recognition. It will devise subtle, religiously acceptable means to call attention to the service rendered. If we stoutly refuse to give in to this lust of the flesh, we crucify it. Every time we crucify the flesh, we crucify our pride and arrogance.”
— Richard Foster
Jesus warned against seeking recognition for good deeds, saying, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:1). Hidden service teaches us to surrender our pride and embrace the joy of serving for God’s glory, not our own.
The flesh resists this kind of service. It craves applause and acknowledgment. But when we crucify these desires, we align ourselves with Christ, who “did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Secret service strengthens our faith, cultivates humility, and frees us from the bondage of human approval.
Today, choose a hidden act of kindness—one done in secret and for the glory of God alone. In those moments, you’ll find the Spirit working in your heart, shaping it to look more like Christ’s.
Lord, help me to serve with humility and purity of heart. Teach me to resist the desire for recognition and to find joy in serving You and others quietly. May my acts of service reflect Your love and glorify Your name. Amen.
