In The Volunteer’s Guide to KidMin: Your Role and Its Eternal Impact, I read a few lines that stood out to me:
“Even if your only responsibility on Sunday mornings is to pour goldfish crackers into small cups, you are playing a vital role in creating a welcoming and nurturing environment where children can encounter the love of Jesus. You are feeding the hungry. You are caring for the least of these. And I bet you are playing a part in helping children feel loved and cared for within the church.”
Sometimes we focus on the spectacular and allow delusions of grandeur to undermine the importance of simple acts of presence and care. We are culturally conditioned to believe that the big, glittery, spectacular things are what impress God.
But what Jesus taught was to care for the least of these, to feed the hungry, and to give a cup of cold water (or goldfish) in His name. When you say yes to God and pour goldfish crackers into a cup, fold bulletins, hold a crying baby in the nursery, greet someone at the door, share a word of encouragement, or invite a neighbor over for dinner, you are fulfilling the words of Jesus.
Do not let dreams of doing something “big” cause you to overlook the small, faithful acts of love you are already living or can start living today. Sometimes we allow dreams of what could be—or could have been—to discourage us from simply doing what can be. The Kingdom of God advances not only through grand visions but also through countless, ordinary moments of obedience and love.
“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’” – Matthew 25:40
