There’s a sweet children’s book I recently read to my daughter called The Runaway Bunny. In it, a little bunny tells his mother all the ways he plans to run away. He says he’ll become a fish in a stream, and she promises to become a fisherman. He says he’ll become a rock on a high mountain, and she promises to become a mountain climber. He even says he’ll join the circus and fly through the air, and she promises to be the tightrope walker who will catch him. No matter where he says he’ll go or what he’ll become, his mother’s answer is always the same: “I will find you.”
It reminds me of what David writes in the Psalms:
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:7–8).
And again, in Psalm 23, “Surely your goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days of my life.”
It’s an amazing truth to realize: we have a God who pursues us even more faithfully than the mother bunny. He climbs the mountains of our pride, dives into the depths of our despair, crosses the distance of our wandering hearts, and even takes on human flesh to rescue us. No matter how far we try to run, His love runs farther. What extravagant love He has for us.
At the end of The Runaway Bunny, the little bunny decides he might as well stay home with his momma. They snuggle into their cozy rabbit hole and enjoy some carrots together. When we realize the depths of God’s love for us, why would we want to run from a love like that? Let’s settle by His side and rest in His love. There’s truly nowhere better to be.
